SA Studbook
SA Stud Book The Animal Improvement Act (No 62, 1998) stipulates that a breeders’ society must have a registered registering authority, and there may be only one registering authority per breed in South Africa. A breeders’ society may apply to act as its own registering authority, but most of them prefer to delegate this function to an established registering authority, that is structured to ensure that international standards are not compromised. History of SABBS
History The South African Boerboel Breeders’ Society (SABBS) was registered in terms of the SA Animal Improvement Act, No. 62 of 1998 (AIA) on 18 April 2012, and became operational on 2 September 2014. The founding (mother body) of organised representation of the Boerboel breed – a declared South African landrace – was the South African Boerboel Breeders Association (SABT/SABBA) in 1983. Since then, there have been a number of breakaway groupings. It is hoped that the founding of SABBS will serve as conduit to unite the Boerboel community worldwide under protection of the AIA. Timeline 1983: The SABT/SABBA is established in the Senekal district of the Free State (SA)…

BREED STANDARD CRITERIA The Breed Standard is a guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament and appearance of the breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function. The aim of this Breed Standard is to provide guidelines to breeders, appraisers and judges, who should at all times be vigilant to avoid obvious conditions or excessiveness, that would be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or absolute soundness of the Boerboel. Type, conformation, functional efficiency, mentality and composure are equally important in the evaluation of the Boerboel as a whole. The protective character of the breed is evident, as well as its impressive demeanour,…

I was unfortunately unable to trace this particular definition, but if I were to create my own dictionary I am almost positive that this would be my description as well, only more so. According to the 1987 edition of the Verklarende Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse taal the meaning of the word Boerboel is given as a farm dog of uncertain origin. This is most certainly no longer true, as I am sure you will acknowledge once you have read through this…
